Change Leadership

Icelandic Prime Minister, Katrín Jakobsdóttir

Power of many

Ever wondered “how-you-get-big-things-done” simply? Iceland has a Leader-inspiring example of the Power of Many.

On October 24, 1975 Icelandic women stopped work for a day for the first time to demonstrate the value of women’s work to the economy and society. This simple yet powerful action changed Icelandic society with Iceland electing the first female head of state in the world in 1980.

‘Kvennafrí’, the day when women don’t go to work, has now been repeated for 7 years consecutively to accelerate the realization of gender equality.

Iceland has since 1975 had two elected female Prime Ministers. The current female Prime Minister, Katrín Jakobsdóttir, also stopped work on October 24.

Because the Power of Many were united by one focus and one purpose an accelerated level of change is occurring in Iceland with gender equality.

Note it has accelerated the pace of change not yet reached its end goal. But Iceland has become the #1 country in the world in gender equality with Iceland the most gender-equal country in the world for the 14th consecutive year – World Economic Forum, June 21, 2023.

As a Leader you need to be thinking how you can use the Power of Many. You can use this example to accelerate gender equality in your organization, but also think more broadly.

This is “how-you-get-big-things-done”. Leadership can be so much easier when you Lead the Many as a Powerful Collective.
